In the Spring of
1995 the Kennedy Center
hosted a presentation on Japan in conjunction with the
Cherry Blossom Festival which featured Japanese
culture, sword fighting and drums. A dozen Shirone Edo Kites
built by master kitebuilder Mr. Kazuo Tamura, the Chief
Director at the Shirone Kite Museum in Niigata-ken, Japan.
served as the backdrop for this presentation.
The Kennedy Center asked the club if we could find some people
that would carry a couple of the Edo's in the Cherry Blossom
Festival Parade. Needless to say there were many
volunteers. Mr. Tamura also participated in the Smithsonian
Kite Festival, and demonstrated a couple of the large Edos with his
kite team there.
After the Smithsonian festival, Mr. Tamura presented the club
with one of the Edo's in appreciation for our help. The Kennedy
Center also presented the club with another of the Edo's.
